Homily
As you listened to today’s Gospel – which son were you? Were/are you the one who makes all the correct noises – but does’nt follow through? Or were you the one who, while denying the request, eventually did the right thing? Have you been both at different times?
I suspect that most of us have been both on occasion. We can all point to others who say all the right words, but do not act on them. It is not simply in Church either; it is easy to find political and community leaders who make all the right noises, but whose behaviour does not reflect their words.
This is to suggest that one or the other is a bad person. We can all, at different times, find reasons why we cannot do what God is calling us to. Sometimes, they can even be valid!
Jesus is making a point that God does not accept any of our “No’s” as being final. God always gives us another chance.
When God next calls us – which brother will you be?
